Structure of Cellulose Nanofibril Gels with Alcohols

Our group has been working partially oxidized cellulose nanofibrils which form gels in aqueous formulations. Recently we have observed that these fibrils also gel when dialysed into ethanol, methanol or propanol from aqueous suspensions, but not if directly dispersed in the alcohol from freeze-dried fibrils. This suggests that residual water in the suspensions plays an important role in stabilizing the gels. When NaCl is added the gels become more rigid but also brittle. Addition of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) results in stronger gels even though this surfactant does not normally form micelles in alcohols. In this experiment we wish to use contrast variation to determine whether the water is localized near the cellulose nanofibrils, the location of SDS and the effect of added salt on the apparent fibril dimensions and gel structure.
