In this proposal we shall explore the nature of electrospun fibres produced from blends of cellulose and polystyrene which we shall use as a model to develop high strength materials. We intend to explore two aspects of this system; namely the influence of cross-linking and the influence of cellulose nanofibrils. We shall use a modified, isotopically labelled, polystrene as model carrier for the cellulose in electrospinning. The polystyrene will be cross-linked by virtue of reactive side-groups in conjuction with a photoinitiator. cross-linking will be undertaken at different points of the spinning process. We shall explore the influence of cross-linking on the level of backbone anisotropy. We shall explore if there is a memory of the polymer chain trajectory following heating. Finally the influence of the cross-linked polystyrene on added cellulose nanofibrils will be explored.
