Interaction of keratin with surfactants studied by SANS

DOI

This proposal constitutes part of our ongoing study towards understanding how keratin, an important protein component of hair and skin, interacts with ionic surfactants using SANS. Both SDS and C12TAB will be used as model surfactants and their deuterated versions will help enhance interfacial structural resolution across the aggregates formed. In our recent work, we discovered that certain amino acids bind to keratin, altering its charges and amphiphilic character. We propose to use SANS to examine the interactions and aggregation of keratin and surfactants with and without prior binding of amino acids.
