The impact of polyelectrolytes on surfactant adsorption onto cellulose surfaces

Studying surfactant and mixed surfactant adsorption on model solid surfaces, which mimic real surfaces such as fabrics, hair and skin, is starting to provide a real insight into their applications in detergency, conditioning and lubrication. We (Oxford, STFC and Unilever) have demonstrated how reproducible model cellulose surfaces can be formed by L-B deposition and studied by neutron reflectivity. The adsorption of cationic and cationic / nonionic surfactant mixtures and their impact upon the cellulose surface have been previously studied. Some initial measurements on SURF suggest that polyelectrolytes and electrolyte can have a significant impact upon the nature of the surfactant adsorption onto cellulose and especially upon the structure of the cellulose surface. We request here beam time on SURF to explore these significant and promising observations in more detail.
