The competition between two polymers for adsorption onto one surface

DOI

The behaviour of multiple polymers in competition for colloidal silica has previously been investigated in our group using solvent relaxation nuclear magnetic resonance. We propose using small-angle neutron-scattering to verify these observations, and further investigate the layer structure in samples where both poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) are adsorbing to colloidal silica particles. By contrast matching deuterated PEO to the background solvent, it will be possible to view the conformation of the PVP even in the presence of both polymers. This will allow detailed measurements of the layer volume fraction profile of PVP with and without a competing polymer in the system.
