The experiment will resolve a discrepancy between earlier experiments carried out very recently by us and work elsewhere on the hydrostatic compression of a series of 211 Mn+1AXn phases, with n = 1 and M = Ti,V, Nb, Ta and Cr and X = C, and the relative compressibility of the structural layers, in order to understand why such materials undergo plastic deformation so easily. This is a continuation of experiment RB 910322, which successfully demonstrated that such measurements were possible. However the experimental matrix was not completed as longer counting times than expected were required and significant beam outage occurred. As a consequence data was only acquired on the Ti2AlC sample. We therefore wish to apply for a continuation.
