We have recently demonstrated that we are able to obtain structural information about adsorbed hydrogenous species from a variety of metal catalysts. We emphasise that this is a highly novel development with potentially wide application in catalysis. The method is not restricted to adsorbed species on metals, adsorbed species on oxides are equally feasible and whether they are amorphous or crystalline is irrelevant to the technique. As a demonstration of the generality of the method, in this proposal we aim to structurally characterise the industrially important reaction intermediate methoxy on eta-alumina.
