Ionic Liquid Aggregation in Polymers

Ionic liquid/Polymer mixtures, where the ionic liquid is the minority component are of particular interest for their potential as high temperature plasticisers and conducting membrane components. We have recently published results from a study at ISIS that determined for the first time the extent of solubility of sparingly miscible IL/polymer mixtures. In this case miscibility was established from the swelling of thin films that were annealed in contact with ILs. Intuitively, it seems likely that the surfactant-like structure of ILs would lead to micellisation when dispersed in a polymer matrix, but to our knowledge this idea has never been tested, or explored in terms of Tg reduction versus IL concentration or aggregation. Here we seek beamtime to make the first systematic study of IL aggregation within homopolymer matrices.
