We will exploit the unique capability of Nimrod in the study of the long standing issue of polymer crystallisation. We focus on isotactic polypropylene which has been quenched in to the mesomorphic state. For polymer crystallisation there are three key length scales: the change from random to regular local chain conformation; registry at the atomic scale of the crystal planes in the unit cell (~1nm) and the transformation from random coils to thin (~10nm) lamellar crystals. We will use the extended Q range available with Nimrod to obtain neutron scattering data which follows the solid state transformation from the mesomorphic state to the alpha crystal phase of isotactic polypropylene. These experiments will provide an insightful contrast to previous work on NIMROD on the crystallisation from the melt state.
