This proposal is part 2 of a set of two proposals on Offspec aimed at understanding some of the effects seen in off-specular data and in particular the use of the spin echo grazing incidence scattering (SERGIS) mode. This proposal follows on from the understanding that will be gained in the part 1 proposal. In part 2 we propose to measure imperfect gratings to compare any changes in the experimental results upon going to a more realistic sample. We will measure buried interfaces by depositing polymers on top of imperfect gratings. We will then proceed to investigate polymer layers on gratings containing nanoparticles. This will allow us to investigate systems with two well defined lengthscales - i.e. the grating and nanoparticle sizes. Finally, we will encode the SERGIS experiment in the z plane and thereby separate the specular and off-specular signals to enhance the sensitivity.
