When like-charged ions attract: Size and distribution of cationic clusters in ionic liquids

DOI

Contrary to the strong electrostatic repulsion between like charged ions, last year the Ludwig group, used IR and NMR spectroscopy combined with computational methods, to reveal cation – cation (c-c) cluster formation at room temperature for ILs with 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-pyridinium [HOC4Py] cations. c-c clusters cations form due to hydrogen bonding between the alcohol groups that terminate the cation alkyl chains. This study will probe the liquid nanostructures of two ionic liquids, [HOC4Py] NTf2 and [C5Py]NTf2, which are identical except that the alkyl chain of the former is terminated by OH and the latter by CH3. Hence, ion clustering is expected in [HOC4Py] NTf2 but not [C5Py]NTf2. We will determine the most probable cluster structures, provide details on ion packing, and perform quantitative cluster analysis on these systems for the first time.
