Recent diffraction [GEM] and DINS [Vesuvio] studies of water in carbon nanohorns have suggested that there is substantial proton delocalisation along the H-bond between molecules, such that the intra-molecular parameters are distorted. In effect, there is quantum tunelling of the protons and a high level of connectivity within the H-bond network and the system is more like a quantum gel than a molecular liquid. Furthermore, the system does not show much change with variation of temperature. It is therefore of interest to investigate the dynamics of the system through spectroscopic measurements on various instruments. The proposal is to use IRIS, OSIRIS and TOSCA for these studies.
