The Cohort of Swedish Men is a large population-based cohort of over 45,000 men in the counties of Västmanland and Örebro. All men born 1918-1952 who were residing in Västmanland and Örebro County in 1997 received an invitation to participate in this research study and a questionnaire to answer and return. Approximately 48,000 men responded. Follow-ups were done during 2008/2009 and 2019. The study examine associations of environmental/modifiable risk factors with several cancer sites (e.g., prostate, colorectal and renal cell cancer), myocardial infarction, stroke, cataracts, as well as death causes. The study has a longitudinal design, and to complement the update on exposure data record linkages to the nationwide Cancer Register, the In-Patient Register, and the Cause of Death Register and Population Register are also done. The questionnaires used in the Cohort of Swedish men are the same as the ones that have been used in the Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC). In 2008, a second questionnaire was sent to all members of the Cohort of Swedish Men who were still alive, 37,861 men. The 2008 Health questionnaire collected information on general health status, disease diagnoses, current weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, dental health, medication use, sleep habits, urine and bowel habits, family history of selected diseases, stress, and social support. Kohorten av svenska män (COSM) är en omfattande populationsbaserad uppföljningsstudie med mer än 45 000 deltagande män i Västmanland och Örebro län. Alla män födda 1918-1952 som var bosatta i Västmanland och Örebro län fick 1997 en inbjudan till studien och en enkät om kost och livsstil. Ungefär 48 000 män besvarade enkäten. Uppföljande enkäter har skickats ut 2008/2009 och 2019. I studien undersöks samband mellan miljö/förändringsbara riskfaktorer och olika typer av cancer (t.ex. cancer i prostata, tarm, njurar), hjärtinfarkt, stroke, benskörhet, grå starr, och andra dödsorsaker. Hälsoenkäten 2008 samlade information om allmänt hälsotillstånd, sjukdomsdiagnoser, aktuell vikt, längd, midje- och höftomfång, tandhälsa, medicinanvändning, sömnvanor, urin- och tarmvanor, familjehistoria av utvalda sjukdomar, stress och socialt stöd. In 1997 all men who lived in Västmanland or Örebro County and were born 1918-1952 received an invitation by mail to participate in this research study together with a questionnaire to be answered and returned. Follow-ups have been performed approximately every tenth year starting in 2008. At the follow-up 2008/2009 the questionnaire was extended and separated into two questionnaires. An additional follow-up was done during 2019.

Alla män födda mellan 1918 och 1952 bosatta i Örebro eller Västmanlands län mottog under 1997 en inbjudan till denna forskningsstudie samt en enkät att besvara och returnera. Uppföljning har gjorts med ca 10 års mellanrum med början 2008. Inför det första uppföljningstillfälle utökades tidigare enkät och delades därför upp i två enkäter, dessa skickades ut under 2008 och 2009. Ytterligare uppföljning har gjorts under 2019.
