Evaluation of inelasticity effects in diffraction

DOI

For total diffraction measurements using neutrons it is important to correct the data for inelasticity effects, especially for samples containing light atoms. Conventionally this has been done by Placzek type formulae, but this approach breaks down for hydrogen. There is, however, a proposed alternative approach where the correction is evaluated from experimental inelastic scattering data. We wish to use GEM beamtime to investigate this approach. A test measurement has shown that the GEM incident beam can be monochromated by the disc choppers, but significantly more beamtime is required for further investigation. We wish to use GEM to make crude inelastic scattering measurements of several test materials (H2O, D2O and NaH), and to use these to correct the corresponding diffraction data for inelasticity.
