Multi-dimensional investigation and distribution characteristics analysis of Gut Microbiota of different marine fish in Fujian Province of China

More than one hundred of fish species have been cultured in many fish farms along 3752 kilometers coastline of Fujian Province in South China. This would be a good model for evaluating the distribution characteristics of the gut microbiota of 7 cultured species living in the same aquatic regions or one species (Epinephelus akaara) separately living in 5 latitude regions. After identifying the horizontal association between the gut microbiota of 7 different fish species captured from the same habitat, most fishes had similar distribution characteristics in 4 intestinal segments, with a decreasing trend of Proteobacteria and Vibrionaceae abundance and an increasing trend of Firmicutes and Bacillaceae abundance from the foregut to the hindgut, while in content, Vibrionaceae was the most abundant family. According to the population and source tracker, the microbiota in the content was more closely associated with the gut microbiota than previously observed. In addition, in the same habitat under the same diet, the microbiota diversity between different species of fish was significantly different, indicating that the host genetics might be the most important factor. We also quantified the horizontal correlation between the gut microbiota and geographic factors of E. akaara in 5 latitudes of aquaculture habitats. Mantel analysis showed that AN, SiO32-, DO and NO2- were the most principal factors affecting the microbial community. Taken together, this study used the long coastal regions as a special model to evaluate the gut microbiota of marine commercial fish, that would be beneficial for healthy and sustainable development of aquaculture.
