This dataset contains seven netcdf files that can be used, inter alia, to run the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) model with a parameterization for internal wave-driven mixing and geothermal forcing at the seafloor activated.
- Four files (with names including ‘zdfiwm_forcing_’) contain six two-dimensional (longitude, latitude) fields that are read by the ‘zdfiwm.F90’ routine of NEMO. These fields are provided on the ORCA2, eORCA1 and ORCA05 global grids, as well as on a regular grid at half-degree resolution. The fields on the regular grid can be used to create higher resolution forcing fields via interpolation. Note that the interpolation should not create negative values.
- Three files (with names including ‘geothermal_forcing_’) provide the geothermal heat flux mapped by Lucazeau (2019) which is read by the ‘trabbc.F90’ routine of NEMO. This file is provided on the ORCA2 and eORCA1 global grids, as well as on a regular grid at one-degree resolution. Interpolation can be used to create fields for other NEMO grids. Again, such interpolation should not create negative values.
Further description of these forcing files and the associated parameterizations, together with an analysis of their effects in long eORCA1 experiments, can be found in references provided below. Note that the ‘zdfiwm_forcing_…’ forcing files provided here include power from subinertial internal tides, as described in de Lavergne et al. (2024).
The file formats are suited to NEMO version 4.2 and more recent versions. They can readily be modified to work with earlier versions of NEMO.
