At five coastal sites in Southern California we used metabarcoding to profile Vibrio associated prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities. We used 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequences derived from total RNA and cDNA to characterize the active communities of bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes, including both phytoplankton and multicellular organisms. We further sequenced HSP60 gene sequences to characterize the vibrio-specific community in both whole-community and vibrio isolate samples. We also did shotgun metagenomic sequencing for some of these Vibrio isolates.
