Spontaneous solvation of graphene from KC24(NH3) and KC8 graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) in tetrahydrofuran (THF)

Liquid phase exfoliation of graphite is a scalable method for the production of graphene with an inbuilt medium for the manipulation of the graphene into applications. Much like salt dissolving in water, we have recently shown that layered salts of graphite, graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) can dissolve in polar solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF). This gentle dissolution results in undamaged, negatively charged graphene sheets in solution.This experiment aims to investigate the mechanism of dissolution of graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), KC24NH3 and KC8 in THF, firstly by monitoring the changes in their structure as the solvent is added, and secondly, by observing the appearance of small angle scattering due to the spontaneous solvation of graphene.
