Test experiment: Neutron diffraction on helium in silica

DOI

We request 3 days of beamtime on GEM to attempt to perform neutron diffraction on helium inside vitreous SiO2. Significant amounts of helium can be dissolved into the glass network, without significantly altering the structure of the network itself. Therefore, if this experiment is succsssful, the helium will provide a probe of the glass structure, and in particular the interstitial voids in the network. Our first aim will be to successfully perform a novel experiment. If it is successful, then our next aim is to use the results to test the void model o the First Sharp Diffraction Peak.
