Giant spin fluctuations and their effect on the first order magnetic transition in the itinerant strong ferromagnet La(Fe,Si)13

DOI

A giant enhancement of the heat capacity in La(Fe13-xSix) indicates the presence of large spin fluctuations at the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. The nature of the low-energy magnetic excitations in LaFe(13-xSix) is not clear at this time, however a free energy landscape with multiple low energy barriers may result in the presence of anomalous metamagnetic excitations, which are soft over a large region of reciprocal space. The aim of this proposal is to begin to determine the nature of the magnetic excitations in La(Fe13-xSix) (x=1.6, 1.2) by first probing their energy scale and their extent in q-space. Our long term goal is to relate the spin fluctuations to the thermodynamic properties and, in particular, the entropy in LaFe(13-xSix).
