A key aim of the Realigning Children’s Services (RCS) programme is to improve the availability and use of evidence about local needs and services. Although local planners and practitioners often have access to good information about those already in contact with targeted or specialist services, less is generally known about the characteristics, needs and perceptions of the wider population of children and young people. Further information about the programme can be found the Realigning Children’s Service website. With this gap in mind, the RCS programme involved three related survey exercises in 2015-2016, aimed at collecting information about the health and wellbeing of children and young people from birth to the mid-teens. Two of the surveys engaged young people directly as participants while the third collected information from parents of younger children. These surveys were repeated, with some minor changes to the questionnaires, with the second tranche of CPPs in 2016-2017. Survey of pupils in P5 to P7: Conducted in primary schools across the participating Local Authorities (LAs), using online Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing (CASI) with audio support. Total achieved sample size of 25,316 across all five LAs. Survey of pupils in S1 to S4: Conducted in secondary schools across the participating Local Authorities (LAs), again using Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing (CASI) but based on an existing survey – the Scottish Adolescent Lifestyles and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS). Total achieved sample size of 32,246 across all five LAs. Survey of parents of children aged 0-8: Conducted in homes across the participating Local Authorities (LAs), using face-to-face interviewing and quota sampling. The parent survey was not conducted in West Lothian. Total achieved sample size of 1,867 across the four participating LAs.New edition informationFor the second edition (June 2020), the parent dataset covering data from the survey of parents of children aged 0-8 has been added to the study.
