Water sampling was performed using a CTD Rosette system, consisting of 12 L Niskin bottles. Total alkalinity (AT) and total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations were measured at the Institute of Carbon Cycles at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Geesthacht, Germany. We used a Marianda VINDTA 3C (Versatile Instrument for the Determination of Titration Alkalinity) to determine the DIC concentration by coulometric titration. We analyzed the AT concentration by potentiometric titration with a Metrohm 888 Titrando together with an Aquatrode pH probe. We calibrated both instruments against certified reference materials (CRMs) provided by Andrew Dickson (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Following the determination of DIC and AT, we computed pH (on the total scale), including nutrients and in-situ salinity/temperature, with the CO2Sys program (version 25) of Lewis and Wallace (1998). Phosphate, silicate, nitrate, and nitrite concentrations were determined with an Aliance CF-Autoanalyzer (Model: Evolution III); and ammonia with OPA-fluorescence, at the AWI Nutrient Facility in Bremerhaven.
