The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of racial awareness in white, West Indian and Asian primary school children (parental data only, child data was not deposited).

Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Whether parent ever visits child's school and why, opinion of teachers, whether child likes school, subjects liked/disliked, parent's perception of progress, opinion of school. Knowledge of child's friends and attitude towards, whether tries to prevent child playing with any other children. Attitude towards neighbours and their children, opinion of area. Whether child asks questions about different religions and races and parents' response, attitude to schools with mixed races and mixed religions, whether believes children should be taught about different religions and races, what parents' role should be, opinion of degree of racial harmony in the country, attitude towards situations of conflict beween own child and child from a different race, parent's predicted reactions. Type of district parent would like to move to, whether would object to presence of different racial groups in district. Type of school parent would like child to attend in future, parent's aspiration for child on leaving school. Background Variables Number of children and ages, father's and mother's occupations, hours mother spends working.

equal numbers of children were drawn from eighteen schools, eight in Brent and Hounslow, eight in the Yorkshire Metropolitan area of Kirklees, and two from North Yorkshire
