Norwegian Travel Writing Corpus 1800–1900

DOI

The dataset Norwegian Travel Writing Corpus 1800–1900 (short title: the Norreis corpus) is a collection of bibliographic metadata on 744 books about travel in Norway, published between 1800 and 1900. The data were exported from the Alma library system and describe books listed in the catalogue of the National Library of Norway. The data were collected in relation to my PhD project in Scandinavian literary studies at NTNU: Litterær landmåling: Reiseskildringer fra Norge 1800–1900 (english title: Literary Mapping: Travelogues from Norway, 1800–1900)

The corpus was collected using the following criteria: 1) medium: published book, 2) publication year: between 1800 and 1900, 3) genre: travelogue (i.e. a non-fictional, first-person narrative of a journey), and 4) geographic area described: Norway.

The dataset may be relevant for researchers working on travel writing, Scandinavian literary history, book history, cultural history, tourism history, and nineteenth-century studies. It may also be used for bibliographic mapping, corpus building, distant reading approaches, or comparative studies of travel literature across national traditions and historical periods.
