Op het terrein zijn door de eeuwen heen meerdere ontwikkelingen (verwoesting, herbouw, verbouw) geweest totdat een nieuwbouw uit 1836 aan de Brugstraat de blauwdruk ging vormen van het gasthuis in de 19de- en 20ste eeuw. Het gebouw aan de Brugstraat vormde het hoofdgebouw van de instelling in de periode van 1836 tot aan de verhuizing in 1970.
