Het gebouw is in 1904 gebouwd in opdracht van de Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van het landgoed Sonsbeek. Tegelijkertijd zijn ook de nummer 31-33 en 35-37 gebouwd, waarvan eerstgenoemde is ontworpen door de bekende Arnhemse architect Willem Welsing. Vanwege stilistische overeenkomsten zou ook het blok 39-41 door Welsing ontworpen kunnen zijn.
