Pressure-dependence of the anisotropic exchange interactions in two closely related Co(II)-dimers.

DOI

There are no magneto-structural correlations for clusters containing transition metal ions with non-zero orbital angular momentum in the ground state. Octahedrally coordinated Co(II) has a 4T1g electronic ground state, and hence an orbital angular momentum of L = 1. The two dimeric Co(II) clusters we propose to study have a very similar structure, but one has an S = 1 and the other an S = 0 ground state. Given the very similar structure of the two molecules we expect significant changes to the exchange interactions in those dimers by applying hydrostatic pressure. We, therefore, propose to spectroscopically determine the pressure-dependence up to 2.5 GPa of the anisotropic exchange interactions in the two Co(II) dimers by inelastic neutron scattering on LET. We strongly believe that these experiments will advance the understanding of anisotropic exchange interactions in Co(II) compounds.
