We have recently carried out an inelastic neutron scattering experiment at LET in order to investigate the excitations in the quantum spin ice Yb2Ti2O7. The single crystal sample used for this study is of very high quality and so unlike other Yb2Ti2O7 samples it undergoes a transition to long-range ferromagnetic order at 0.24 K. In zero applied magnetic field we observed a magnetic dispersion mode at ~ 0.2 meV which may correspond to a plasmon excitation of a Higgs boson. In 0.75 tesla, we observed a much stronger signal from spin waves. We propose to investigate the evolution of the excitations seen in the quantum spin ice Yb2Ti2O7 in applied magnetic fields below 0.5 tesla.
