We propose to explore the morphology of binary mixtures of poly(ethylene oxide), a biomimetic macromolecule, and two different ionic liquids, differing in their hydrogen bonding donor ability, namely 1-ethyl,3-methylimidazolium [Tf2N] and 1-ethyl,2,3-dimethylimidazolium [Tf2N].Binary mixtures of PEO and ILs are presently receiving great attention as eco-responsible solvent media and a careful understanding of the nature of the interactions between the two components is required. It appears that hydrogen bonding interactions between the acidic hydrogens belonging to the ILs and the ether groups in the PEO macromolecules play a major role in determining mutual solubility of the two compounds and a series of bulk properties of the resulting mixtures. By combining neutron diffraction experiments at SANDALS together with X-ray ones, we aim to get a complete description of the morphology.
