Cation/Anion Order in Ion Excess Garnets and Ruddlesden Popper Phases

DOI

In this work, we will examine the Li distribution in cubic and tetragonal La3Zr2Li7O12, tetragonal LaSr2Sb2Li7O12, as well as the variation in the distribution with temperature. Other non-stoichiometric garnets, La3-xSb2Li5+3xO12 will also be examined to determine whether Li occupancy of the La site is possible, or whether cation vacancies simply form. Through these studies we will gain substantial further information on the nature of the Li sites and ordering effects within these garnet systems, which are attracting interest due to their high Li ion conductivity. We will also examine the anion excess Ruddlesden Popper phase, Sr3Fe2O4F4. Preliminary X-ray diffraction studies suggest that there is ordering within the interstitial sites within the ab plane in this material. Neutron diffraction studies are required to elucidate the nature of this ordering as well as the magnetic structure.
