GBR symbiosis structure following bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef

Symbiodinium are lost from coral species under thermal stress conditions, resulting in coral bleaching, potentially leading to elevated coral mortality rates. This study aimed to characterise Symbiodinium communities in reef sediments and three Coral host systems, investigating the effect that mass bleaching events play in the composition of Symbiodinium community composition over time. ITS2 amplicon gene sequencing analysis was performed on samples collected from 26 reef sites, and Dada2 ITS2 sequence analysis was used to characterise Symbiodinium populations.
