Excitation spectrum of isotope-enriched Sr2IrO4

DOI

Sr2IrO4 is an important material in condensed matter physics, having been discovered to host a novel Jeff=½ Mott insulating state.Yet while magnetic fluctuations play a crucial role in the physical phenomena, investigations using neutrons have been severely hampered by the large neutron absorption cross section of the natural isotopic mixture of Ir. RIXS and optical methods have been used to study aspects of the excitation spectrum of Sr2IrO4 but the microscopic origins of some features remain a mystery, particularly those in the region of 400 meV. Our experiment plans to complement these previous studies with a neutron scattering experiment made possible by our recently developed 193Ir isotope enrichment. This will give unique insights into the magnetic excitation spectrum of Sr2IrO4 relevant for its unusual physical properties.
