Geochemical analysis of wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyses from IODP Site 395-U1564 and Site 395C-U1564

We present an inorganic geochemical dataset from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1564, located on the Gardar Drift in the North Atlantic Ocean, a major contourite drift shaped by deep-water circulation processes (Parnel-Turner et al., 2025). Sediment cores were recovered during IODP Expeditions 395C (June-August 2021) and 395 (June-August 2023). In 2024, major and trace element compositions were determined by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), following the analytical procedures of Johnson et al. (1999) and Conrey et al. (2023). These measurements provide major and trace element concentrations that serve as a geochemical reference framework for Site U1564 and were used to calibrate X-ray fluorescence core-scanning records. This calibration enables the generation of high-resolution, quantitative elemental records supporting paleoceanographic, sedimentological, and paleoenvironmental investigations of North Atlantic deep-water circulation and climate variability (Ibrahim et al., 2026, in prep).
