De voormalige Cadettenschool uit 1893 is gesitueerd in het eeuwenoude stadspark Alkmaarderhout. Als architect voor de nieuwbouw werd J.J. van Nieukerken ingehuurd. Deze gerenommeerde architect was een man van zijn tijd, gespecialiseerd in historische stijlen. Voor de Cadettenschool werd een neorenaissancistische beeldtaal gekozen. Het gebouw werd, na een grondige verbouwing in 1927, herbestemd tot stadsziekenhuis.
