Human Rights Organizations in Egypt, 1990s - 2009

DOI

This report provides an overview of several human rights organizations operating in Egypt. To map these organizations, to highlight their scope and to illustrate possibilities for synergies in order to promote cooperation is the main purpose of this research. The legal status of NGOs and the effects of the Associations Law 84, issued by the Egyptian government in 2002, is a focal point. The difficulties NGOs meet in obtaining a legal status as a Non-governmental organization, reflect in complications in fundraising and discussion about foreign influences. Furthermore, incidences related to church building, the Christian minority and debates about indicating the religious affiliation on identity cards are expounded in this paper.
