Water column samples were taken from 8 depths in the Atlantic Ocean at the North Pond site on the Western flank of the Mid Atlantic Ridge and sequentially filtered onto 5 and 0.22 micron filters. Samples were sequenced with 349F and 806R archaeal specific and EMP primers. Sediment samples were also taken at this site and sequenced with EMP primers.
