We ask for 3 days on TOSCA to conduct Inelastic Neutron Spectroscopy on potassium/sodium encapsulated in silica gel materials (K2Na-SG) and for in situ formation of potassium/sodium amides encapsulated in silica gel. Our previous work on a similar formation of NaH and NaNH2 in silica gel have been very successful and showed that we can not only form these valuable industrial chemicals in nanoparticulate form, but make them non-pyrophoric and thus easier to use in synthetic organic chemistry.Na-SG, K-SG, K2Na-SG materials are used at the moment as powerful reducing agents and for hydrogen production. The proposed study is a continuation of our previous, successful studies on the in situ uptake of hydrogen and ammonia in Na-Silica Gel. The primary outcome will be an investigation of the formation and dynamics of encapsulated sodium and potassium amide silica gel materials.
