Composition dependent structure in mixtures of water and hydrogen bonded monomethyl ether

DOI

This is part of a project concerning the interplay between water and other H-bonded liquids using a range of complementary experimental techniques, e.g. dielectric spectroscopy, calorimetry, light- and neutron scattering. Ongoing studies on mixtures of water and a range of H-bonded model liquids show an anomalous behaviour in the composition dependence of the structural relaxation. We find an intriguing non-monotonic variation of the structural dynamics with water content. To elucidate how the structural dynamics corresponds to H-bond mediated structure formations we aim to study both how water molecules coordinate to the model liquid molecules at short length scales and if/how larger structural inhomogeneities form. The ultimate goal is to find the connection between structure and dynamics in these mixtures. This work forms an essential part of PhD-student Johan Sjöström¿s thesis work.
