Powder diffraction determination of the magnetic structure of Ba2LiOsO6

DOI

We aim to investigate the antiferromagnetic ground state of Ba2LiOsO6 using neutron powder diffraction, determining both the magnetic ordering propagation vector, and the magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment. Bulk measurements have revealed that Ba2LiOsO6 is an antiferromagnet below 8 K. Thanks to strong spin-orbit coupling and orbital degeneracy, a j=3/2 state is created for which there should be a vanishing magnetic moment. However, from the inverse magnetic susceptibility an effective moment of 0.733 mu_B is obtained. Given the low expected value for the ordered momen,t it is essential that we use a high resolution neutron powder diffractometer that still maintains sufficient flux, and hence we request one day of beamtime at WISH to measure at 2 K, within the magnetic phase, and at 20 K, above the transition.
