Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.The aim of the project was to improve access to local and trade directories for the period 1750-1919 by making a substantial collection of English and Welsh directories available online as a Digital Library of Historical Directories. This digital resource comprises in total some 600 directories, covering every English county together with Wales, and ranging widely over the period 1750-1919 (the latter cut-off point chosen for copyright reasons). There is a particular focus on the 1850s, 1890s and 1910s, with at least one directory provided for each county in each of these decades. The digitisation of the volumes involved a two-stage process, in which (1) the hard-copy source was scanned to produce a graphic image of each page, and then (2) those images were processed using OCR software to generate a machine-readable text file.An online version of this resource can be found on the Website of the University of Leicester.

This data collection includes the following directories:- A Directory of Sheffield; including the manufacturers of the adjacent villages: with the several marks of the cutlers, scissor & filesmiths, edgetool, & sickle makers. To which are added, the regular setting out and return of the posts; and a correct list of the coaches & waggons (1787)- The Leeds Directory for the year 1798. Containing an alphabetical list of the corporation, clergy, merchants, professors of the law and physic, manufacturers, traders, &c.; also particulars of the mail and other coaches, waggons, and the navigation barges, by which goods and merchandise are conveyed from this town (1798)- Directory, General and Commercial, of the Town & Borough of Leeds, for 1817, containing an alphabetical list of the merchants, manufacturers, tradesmen, and inhabitants in general ... to which is prefixed, a brief but comprehensive history of the borough (1817)- History, Directory & Gazetteer of the County of York; with select lists of the merchants & traders of London and the principal commercial and manufacturing towns of England ... also a copious list of the seats of the nobility and gentry of Yorkshire. Vol. I: West Riding (1822)- History, Directory & Gazetteer, of the County of York; with a variety of commercial, statistical, and professional information: also, copious lists of the seats of the nobility and gentry of Yorkshire. Vol. II: East & North Ridings (1823)- A New, General, & Commercial Directory of Sheffield and its Vicinity, in which the names, occupations, &c. are copiously compiled, and alphabetically arranged; also, a classification of all that are engaged in the various branches of the Sheffield manufacture (1825)- General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Leeds; including the out-townships of Armley, Beeston, Bramley, Chapeltown, Farnley, Headingley, with Burley, Holbeck, Hunslet, Potter-Newton, and Wortley (1826)- Leeds and Clothing District Directory (1830)- History, and General Directory, of the Borough of Sheffield, with Rotherham, Chesterfield, and all the villages and hamlets within a circuit of ten miles round the Capital of Hallamshire; Main Topics:The directories included are of many different kinds, commonly embracing trade, commercial, and private resident directories, together with gazetteers, almanacs, official information, etc. For the purposes of deposit in the UK Data Archive, the collection has been divided into 35 studies on a regional and temporal basis.
