Aim of the project is to identify candidate small mitochondrial highly-transcribed RNAs (smithRNAs) from multiple representative Metazoa species. This entails mapping small RNAs on the mitochondrial genome and then predicting the possible target of remapping small RNAs on the transcriptome. This information will be used, in the end, to describe the taxonomic distribution of smithRNAs and any arising difference across taxa.

The Bioproject may eventually include, for each studied species: a) RNAseq, with replicates, used to assemble the transcriptome b) sncRNAseq, with replicates, used to characterize small RNAs c) WGS, used to assemble the mitochondrial genome d) the assembled transcriptome e) the assembled and annotated mitochondrial genome.
