We have recently prepared a new strontium ruthenate, SrRu2O6, using hydrothermal chemistry. The material shows magnetic order, probably ferromagnetic, than persists above, and preliminary neutron diffraction data measured using GEMXpress at room temperature show Bragg peaks in addition to those expected from the atomic structure. This proposals aims to understand properly the atomic and magnetic structure of the new phase and the evolution of magnetism with temperature. In general, the chemistry of precious-metal oxides has been less explored than for oxides of the first-row transition series: there is scope for discovery of materials that may have interesting, and useful, physical properties, and this works forms part of a larger project of the investigators in this field. The work is part of the PhD project of the student Craig Hiley.
