Neutron Diffraction Studies on Yb3(GaGe)10 compound

A new compound Yb3(GaGe)10 compound was obtained from the reactions by using indium and gallium respectively as reactive metal flux. Available laboratory Xray crystallography shows that it crystallizes in a monoclinic system with its own type structure and lattice parameters; a = 12.219(1) Å, b = 10.737(1) c = 8.4708(8) Å. Gallium and germanium form octagons, hexagons and tetragons, the first two are filled with one ytterbium atom each and the third one kept it open. Pauli paramagnetic behavior is evident from magnetic measurements for both compounds. A critical question still remains: is there a difference in elemental distribution involving gallium and germanium sites? Recently, we were able to synthesize large crystals and would like to perform the neutron diffraction experiment to compare site occupancy of the elements.
