Resubmission of: The Dynamics of Paraquat in Aqueous Solution and Hydrated Clay

DOI

This proposal will enable us to study the dynamics of an important water soluble pesticide molecule, paraquat, in solution and in the interlayer region of swelling montmorillonite clays. Our main aim is to determine the rotational and particularly translational dynamical characteristics of this molecule under confinement: this information is of prime fundamental and environmental interest. Our hypothesis is that due to the high water solubility and cationic structure, the paraquat molecule will be quite strongly adsorbed onto these negatively charged hydrophilic soil-like particles - we hope this will the case as these clays are the recommended antidote for paraquat poisoning! Our proposed experiment, and its¿ sister structural study (SANDALS, proposal 920410 just completed), will enable us to test this hypothesis directly, and to quantify the molecular diffusion coefficient.
