Antarctic Ice Sheet tipping in the last 800 kyr warns of future ice loss

These are the data for a paper accepted (but not yet published as of 1 May 2025) in Communications Earth & Environment.

The data were produced using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM, www.pism.io).

The data comprise three transient simulations, each covering the last 800,000 years and finishing at present day. These are saved in the folders RunA, RunB, RunC. Each simulation was split into a few chunks:

Run A comprises 01,01A,01B Run B comprises 02A, 02B, … 02F. Run C comprises 00A, 00B, … 00F.

Scalar time series are provided in: ts_800ka_16km_XXX.nc where XXX is the chunk label.

Snapshots of a few key spatial variables (e.g. ice thickness, surface & basal velocity, etc) are provided at 1000 year intervals in: extra_800ka_16km_XXX.nc where XXX is the chunk label.

Additional snapshots are provided as: snap_800ka_16km_XXX_YYYYYYYY.nc where XXX is the chunk label and YYYYYYYY is the year. For example snap_800ka_16km_00B.nc_-561510.000 in Run C, is for chunk 00B at 561510 years before present.

We also ran equilibrium simulations starting from the snapshots. Details are listed as follows and also in xlsx files within the RunB and RunC folders.

In Run A only one equilibrium simulation was run: this was for a duration of 50,000 years starting at present day. The file label is 01Eq. Snapshots were saved at the start (snap_800ka_16km_01Eq.nc_0.000.nc) and end (snap_800ka_16km_01Eq.nc_50000.000).

In Run B the equilibrium simulations are stored in a separate folder RunB/EquilibriumSims. Files are named according to the time they started from. For example, extra_800ka_16km_Eq-128200.nc started at 128200 years before present. The first equilibrium simulations ran for 30,000 years. These were extended for a further 30,000 years (file names have suffix _Cont30). Finally another 40,000 year chunk was added (suffix _Cont60), bringing the total to 100,000 years. Note that some of the filenames are 1 year different to the corresponding snapshot. Probably because of some rounding/truncating in a script. For example, extra_800ka_16km_Eq-10749.nc was actually started from time -10750.

Run C follows the same pattern as Run B, except that the full 100,000 years equilibrium simulations are stored in one file instead of three chunks. The rounding error in the file naming was fixed, so the transient snapshot and corresponding equilibrium file time labels should match without the +/- 1 year difference.

Notebooks for plotting figures are also included. Please note!!! These were built in an ad-hoc fashion on an as-needed basis for particular pieces of analysis, so they are neither optimised nor coded efficiently. Sorry!
