Magnetic Excitations in YbNiSn

DOI

YbNiSn is an Ising ferromagnet with non-colinear spins that undergoes a first order magnetic transition in low magnetic field (0.9 T). The transition is associated with strong critical fluctuations with a small rotation of the field direction yielding a quantum critical end point. The proposal aims to quantify the length and energy scales of the low lying magnetic excitations close to this transition and to compare these with those in itinerant magnets such as MnSi and ZrZn2 and uranium based heavey fermions such as UGe2. Differences in these quantities will help to elucidate why a range of different behaviours are seen in itinerant systems in contrast with standard Gaussian fixed point behaviour seen in localised systems such as ferroelectrics and insulating magnets.
