Molecular Dynamics in Polystyrene

DOI

A basic understanding of the dynamic processes in polystyrene (PS) is a question of utmost interest and has technological ramifications due to its importance in commercial products. muSR can provide unique information about molecular dynamics in PS that covers a gap with what is available with other techniques such as neutron scattering or NMR. During our previous experiment (RB1620008) we found that the change in the temperature dependence of the muon spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) may not be due to the glass transition, as previously understood but instead may be due to a change from the delta–relaxation to the gamma–relaxation dominating. In order to confirm our previous results and interpretation we need to measure the magnetic field dependence of 1/T1. We will also make measurements at lower temperatures to further study the delta relaxation process.
