Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin, onko heillä käytössään matkapuhelinta, mikrotietokonetta, sähköpostiosoitetta ja Internet-yhteyttä. Internet-käyttäjiltä kysyttiin, missä he yleensä käyttävät Internetiä, kuinka usein ja mihin tarkoitukseen. He arvioivat myös omaa kiinnostustaan saada erilaisia asioita tai tietoja (muun muassa elämyksiä, tietoja tapahtumista ja päätöksistä, osallistumisen mahdollisuuksia) kaupungin verkkopalveluiden kautta. Tampereen kaupungin Internet-sivuilla käyntitiheyttä kartoitettiin myös. Lisäksi selvitettiin vastaajien tietokoneisiin tai tietoverkkoihin liittyvää koulutustarvetta. Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin, mitä palveluita he ovat Tampereen kaupungin sivuilta etsineet ja löytyivätkö palvelut helposti ja millaisia ongelmia vastaaja oli kohdannut. Tutkimuksessa kysyttiin myös, ovatko vastaajat kuulleet eTampere-ohjelmasta. Taustamuuttujina olivat muun muassa vastaajan sukupuoli, postinumeroalue, ikäryhmä, ammatti ja koulutus.
The respondents in this survey were residents of the City of Tampere (Finland). Questions covered their access to a mobile phone, PC, e-mail, and the Internet. Those who had access to the Internet were asked about the location, frequency, duration, and purpose of their Internet use. The respondents' familiarity with and use of the City of Tampere website was surveyed. Views were probed on what kind of information, entertainment, services, participation opportunities etc. they would like to access through the city's web pages. The respondents were also asked whether they were familiar with the eTampere programme, and whether they felt they needed training in information networks or computer skills. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, basic education, economic activity, household composition, and number of persons in the household.
