The anaerobic oxidation of methane is mediated by the syntrophic partnership of anaerobic methanotrophic (ANME) archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). There are multiple clades of ANME that have yet to be cultured and to date few ANME species have been analyzed genomically. Here we used a combination of metagenomics and single cell sequencing to recover draft genomes from ANME-1, ANME-2a, ANME-2b, ANME-2c and ANME-3 clades to determine differences in their metabolisms with the goal to understand their niche partitioning in the environment.
