We have found it possible to deposit mesostructured surfactant templated polymer thin films on solid substrates. To date the majority of work has used hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactant templates which are cytotoxic. As we intend to develop these films for biomedical applications we have been investigating using the less cytotoxic zwitterionic surfactant myristyl sulfobetaine as the surfactant template for bio-polymer films. We have also found that the presence calcium chloride is needed to form cubic phase films which we intend to use as support for polymers capable of binding glucose and develop these as sensors. We intend to investigate the mesostructure of zwitterionic surfactant templated polymer films at the silicon-air interface as a function of polymer type and use contrast variation to determine structural contributions.
